The voice of tradition, I trust, will inform posterity of our struggles for freedom.

The voice of tradition, I trust, will inform posterity of our struggles for freedom. If our descendants be worthy the name of Americans they will preserve and hand down to their latest posterity the transactions of the present times; and tho I confess my exclamations are not worthy the hearing, they will see that I have done my utmost to preserve their liberty, for I never will give up the power of direct taxation but for a scourge. I am willing to give it conditionally–that is, after non-compliance with requisitions. – Patrick Henry

US Patent Trademark Office Cancels Washington Redskins Trademarks. What words should be cancelled next?

Sports Illustrated reports:

The United States Patent and Trademark Office canceled six federal trademark registrations for the NFL’s Washington Redskins on Wednesday, saying the nickname is “disparaging to Native Americans” and cannot be trademarked under federal law that prohibits trademark protection on offensive or disparaging language.

There are a large number of other Redskin Trademarks, will they be cancelled too?  So the question is, how quickly with the PTO cancel other “Redskins” trademarks?

Will trademarks that include “WAP” in them be cancelled?  There are at least 89.  What about “Mick”?  There are a number of them What about trademarks that include “Negro”?  There are at least 72!

What about “Nig”?  That one just sounds offensive.

Sambo?  There are four of them!

Ape?  That is listed on Wikipedia as a derogatory term for “(U.S.) a black person” and there rare 115 active records!  Ditto for buck (1028 records), coon (17 records), mammy (3 records),  spook (18 records), spic (24 records),  squaw (38 records).

(2 records), charlie (331 records), cracker (285 records),  gringo (49 records),  honkey (2 records), Peckerwood (3 records), round eye (1 record), brownie (163 records), chug (33 records), townie (12 records), nazi (6), redneck (249), hick (117), bumpkin (7), kraut (7), paddy (58), hun (12), kike (1), abe (53).

Of course there are “oreo” – black on the outside, white on the inside.

Fuck (19 records), shit (13 records),  crap (77 records),  piss (16), tits (18) – 5 of George Carlin’s 7 dirty words have trademarks using them.

Browns?

Just a quick US PTO search turned up a lot of words that someone, somewhere will find offensive.  When will the PTO act?

the worst legislative crime of the ages is perpetrated by this banking and currency bill.

“This [Federal Reserve Act] establishes the most gigantic trust on earth. When the President [Wilson} signs this bill, the invisible government of the monetary power will be legalized….the worst legislative crime of the ages is perpetrated by this banking and currency bill.” — Charles A.
