After the Great Society of the 60s opened the federal financial flood-gates, spending for education tripled between 1964 and 1976 – the very same period that saw the sharpest losses in student productivity and achievement. Spending per student rose from $3165 in 1982 to $3977 in 1987, a 26% increase during a time of [relatively] low inflation. In 1989, national per pupil expenditures came to $4800… higher than any country in the world with the possible exception of Switzerland.
